The Salton Sea

I grew up upwind from the Salton Sea. Some of you may know exactly what that means.

That means that the only time I thought about the Salton Sea was when my entire town smelled like rotten eggs. Occasionally the lovely smell of sulphur wafts up to the Coachella Valley and, well, stinks.

But my recent trip proved there was more to the sea than a bad smell :) As an adult I'd gone down to the area to hike the canyons, but I'd never actually stopped to see the Sea. So this past Christmas Eve, we decided to explore. It's really a strangely fascinating place. A huge body of water, with amazing birds, ghost towns, graffiti, palm oases and sand made of decomposing fish and shells.

We enjoyed the sunny weather, birding, hiking and abandoned towns. Though, the date shake on the way home was probably the highlight for me!

In my Spare Time....

Wait, spare time - what's that? In fact, I do have some spare time, both with and without the little guy. Though I may not go out as often as I used to and travel is a little more complicated, my hobbies haven't changed too much since I became a mom. I just have to think differently about how they are done!

Traveling and hiking is so much fun with the little guy :)
Some of those that I try to do :)

1. Blogging - this is my newest hobby! I've really enjoyed "meeting" so many amazing people. I enjoying having some time to write at the end of the day. I enjoy sharing, writing and all the great stories out there.

2. Photography - I have had fun taking photos of A as a baby. Now that he is a little older, it's harder to capture him sitting still, but it also gives me time to take notice of the other things around. I've really enjoyed finding others who dabble in photography through blogging - and finding those that inspire me!

3. Reading - Little guy goes to bed at 7 pm, which means I have some time to read at night again. Though most books recently have been about parenting or blogging :)

4. Travel - We had an amazing vacation this year in the Canadian Rockies. Glad to have an international trip again! Also, we've had fun exploring California. A is actually pretty good at traveling, and we are also lucky enough to have my parents nearby so we can travel a little on our own!

5. Hiking/Running - Well, running, not so much lately, but hiking - always. We went last Friday and saw a beautiful waterfall! Since I'm a park ranger, it's just part of who I am. Luckily I live in a place where I can hike year round!

What are your hobbies? Any new things I should be taking up? :) This week I'm linking up over at Growing Up Geeky to talk about Hobbies.

The Best of Canada? Beer!

I loved Lisa's post last week so much, I begged her to write some more on that lovely country to the north. Since her blog is titled "Drinks Like Fish," I thought perhaps some opinions on the best beer around might be appreciated - from an expert no less. Not only can she expound on Canadian Drinks, she's got hockey credentials as well :) With no further ado....

Lisa the Goalie!
In my first post I pointed out some differences between the US and Canada. One of the differences listed rye whisky. (I wonder how many of you thought I misspelled whiskey? We don’t have that E in ours. Really.) Also a drink called a bloody ceasar. While a rye and ginger is my personal drink of choice, a lot of people think of beer when they think of Canada. Well, that or ice wine I guess.

Ice wine is definitely not my style – but for those who like it like it a lot. The grapes are harvested after they’ve already frozen on the vine. This means the water inside the grape is frozen so that the rest of the grape is concentrated (once you remove the ice that is). It’s one of those things that requires a confluence of factors all working together – a cold enough climate (it needs to freeze), healthy grapes that have lasted long enough in the season to make it to first frost, a lot of people willing to pick frozen grapes on some very chilly morning etc.

Needless to say, there are really only a few places that make the stuff and it tends to be pretty pricey. Canada is once of the major producers of ice wine and most of it right here in Ontario.

So my preference over ice wine? Well local beer. I’d say local whisky but, while it’s getting better (Forty Creek) it’s still not got a candle on our beer.

The worst thing about the condo my husband convinced me to move into? I am in the middle of downtown Toronto and within spitting distance of FOUR 4! Breweries.

Steam Whistle is right in the heart of the city. It only makes one beer. If you believe it’s ads it does one thing very very well. A couple of years ago T and I hosted an octobervest dinner. T made schnitzel; I made a mock-German chocolate cake; and we had a pilsner tasting. Steam Whistle came out near the top of the list; not THE top but near the top. Lovely; mellow; smooth; a great pilsner.

Then there’s Amsterdam. It makes, again, as it advertises “’Dam good beer.” The 416 (our telephone area code) is one of the nicest wheat beers I’ve ever had.

Granite Brewery is a bit north in the city – the other three are all pretty much in the centre of the city – and sells growlers of its beer. I just love that they’re called growlers.

And then came Mill Street Brewery. And a revitalization of the east end of Toronto began. Now it’s the “Distillery Historic District” of Toronto. The beer is good, don’t get me wrong, but not out of the world wonderful. BUT they do definitely win for being in closest walking distance from the condo’s front door.

But then recently I spent a lovely afternoon at my local pub. And they had the most lovely pint of IPA I’ve tasted in a while. Hops & Robbers by Double Trouble Brewing no pun intended but as the baby daughter of a police officer the name definitely appealed.

I know I prefer different beers now than when I was a kid. And I definitely am more open to other tastes than the big factory breweries. What’s your favourite? If I could somehow smuggle it over the border…well I won’t tell!

Mommy & Me - on vacation!

As a working mom, I often feel like I don't get the quality time I need with my little guy...which is why I am so looking forward to our upcoming vacation. I know, I do, that in many ways vacation with a toddler is actually more work. The "getting there" part is especially stressful. But it can also be so much more fun.

We've been lucky enough to be able to travel quite a bit with A in his first year and a half of life. On the whole, he has been pretty good at adapting. Sleep isn't as good as it is at home, but time changes confuse my internal clock too, so how can I blame him?

The best parts? Watching him experience new things. Seeing the world from a toddler's perspective. Things I wouldn't think were interesting can catch his attention for long stretches of time (luggage tags, for example!). He's willing to try new foods, makes lots of friends (by waving to everyone in existence) and we end up exploring places we otherwise might not have gone.

We've had some fun times on our vacations!

I think this trip has potential to be a great one. Lots of outdoor time, lots of hotel rooms with 2 separate rooms, maybe even some trains! Wish us luck :)

Hotel made of Ice?

My husband has some crazy ideas.

One of his crazy ideas is that one day we should stay in a hotel made of ice. Yes, ice. Cold, wet, frozen ice.

I am not exactly sure why this idea seems like a good idea to anyone, but apparently there are multiple ice hotels out there. Canada, of course, houses some of these strange places. Close enough that I may not have an excuse not to go...

Apparently, these hotels are so popular that Quebec now boast two of them. People pay rates of nearly $400 to stay in a room. Granted there is a fireplace in some rooms, so maybe there is more warmth than I think? But I really do feel that staying in a lodging made of ice is something I'd do out of desperation, not out of fun. I'd love to see it, love to go to a resturant or bar made of ice...but to sleep, no thank you!

Ok, maybe it looks pretty cool...

Would you go? Please explain the allure :)

Olympics...Sochi or Rio?

So I've been thinking that we should go to the Olympic games. I vaguely remember the '84 Olympics...I think it's time to make some new memories!

So my brief analysis has led me to believe that is actually a much closer decision than I had thought. I was certain that Rio would come out way ahead, I mean, it's Rio! But Sochi is also a resort city on the beach (though it will be winter). If NHL players are there, well, Hockey is a bigger draw that golf (yep, first time golf will be in the olympics!)...and crazy enough, it looks like it's cheaper to go to Russia than Brazil?

I'll keep dreaming :) Where will you be...

NYC Public Library

One of the most beautiful places that I visited while I was in NYC was the NYC public library. It was unexpected, and I am so glad I took the time to tour it.

I love libraries (thanks dad!). I have three library cards. I could spend hours there, it's like a candy shop, except that you don't have to spend money! I think the library is one of the most important places for a kid. You can lose yourself in so many worlds. Learn so many things. I know some of my best summer moments were biking to the local library and doing my summer reading challenges. I even love the slightly musty smell of public libraries. A will be getting a card as soon as he is old enough.

Even though I love libraries, I had no idea they could be so stunning. I have never been to such a beautiful library as the NYC public library. My college library's reading room was stately, but nowhere near the detailed ceilings, nooks & crannies, lanterns and marble. One would have to be crazy not to fall in love. Generally, when I visit a new place I go to National Park Service sites...this time I made time for something different - totally worth it! I did not see any ghosts though...

Peace Corps Past

Sometimes my life seems monotonous. Not bad, just a little repetitive. I live in the suburbs. I drive to work every day. I sit at my desk. I work at my computer. I drive home. I hug my son. I kiss my husband. I make dinner or do the dishes. I blog and exercise somewhere in there. I go to bed. I start again.

Sometimes I forget that I have had some amazing adventures. I still have great adventures ahead of me.

I spent two years in Panama as a Peace Corps Volunteer (not sure if I've mentioned this here or not!). They were amazing years. I need to scan some more pictures to show you better these great years. Because they were life changing years - you know "the toughest job you'll ever love." I can't believe that I started my Peace Corps journey over 12 years ago.

I was stationed in Boca Chica, Chiriqui, Panama. A small fishing village on the Pacific Coast. I lived in the very tiny house you see below. I learned a lot, made great friends, met fascinating people and had fun. I will share more, I promise, but wanted to share a little with you, now, as I thought about it :)

NYC - full of life!

I was in New York City last week. It is an amazing, vibrant, huge, overwhelming, hot, humid, dirty, fascinating city. As I walked down the streets I saw every type of human on this earth, doing an incredible range of crazy things.

As a blogger, my mind was reeling. So many ideas for things to write about. So much that I wanted to share with you, so many crazy colors and people and stories. I thought, if only I lived here, I'd have so much more to write about! Then I realized you probably get used to wherever you are. The people on the streets of New York City were just going about their business not even noticing the craziness around them.

Parks on abandoned railroad tracks, musicians, artists, homeless people, flies in drinks, tasty food, sundresses, suits, history, future. Overwhelming. Beautiful but too much humanity for me. I need some space, less humidity, more green, more hills. Nice to visit, glad to leave.

Some photojournalistic evidence of my overstimulating week!

Little Blue Truck

My son loves cars. He loves trucks. He loves trains. He loves anything with wheels.

He loves the trash trucks that go by on Fridays. He makes everything move like a car, with or without wheels. He can make a car sound and loves to say "up" and "down" as he pushes his trains over hills.

He also loves farm animals. He has pictures of them in his room and like to say good night to all of them before he sleeps. He can say "moo" and "duck." He goes to the nearby farm to see sheep and goats and cows nearly every week. A close second in his heart only to vehicles.

So when I saw "Little Blue Truck" at the store, I couldn't help but buy it. Farm animals in a little blue truck...what could be better?

Once I opened the book, I liked it even more. A fun story about helping out friends and the importance of helping those in need :) Written in rolling prose with lots of animal and car noises thrown in - it is a huge hit in my house. There is a moral to the story and A loves it when the big dump truck says "HONK" very loudly! What could be better?

So if you have a car and farm-animal-obsessed child like mine, I strongly recommend this book!

Hot, Humid and Delayed

I am still recovering from my trip to NYC.

I finally got home this morning at 4 am. Apparently lightning and thunder and planes don't mix.

I have so many great ideas floating through my head that I really want to share with you, but my brain is still fuzzy from days of 95+ degree temperatures and the same percentage humidity, and not sleeping at all last night!

A had a wonderful time without us, though. His grandparents spoiled him - lucky guy!

So more soon!

My Favorite Vacation - Galapagos

I have had some amazing vacations in the past few years, and fully expect to have a spectacular vacation this fall. So as I look forward to my next vacation...in less than 2 months! I started reminiscing about the other amazing trips I've been lucky enough to take.

So what can I say? Favorite vacation? The Galapagos. There are almost no words to describe how amazing this place is. Stunning. Just the wildlife was so incredible...blue-footed boobies, marine iguanas, penguins oh my!

A's first camera

In order to prepare for our latest plane trip, I bought a few new toys to keep A occupied. One was his first camera. It was still too complicated for him to really use by himself, but he loved carrying it around, making it beep and saying "more." While the pictures aren't the highest quality, I was surprised at how the camera actually took pretty good photos. There were even some kid-friendly borders to play around with and some games that kept me happy :)

That's my camera, mom!

It's HOT in Palm Desert

My parents were here last weekend and mentioned that we should visit them...which I think is a wonderful idea...but then I remembered...Where not to go in summer? Palm Desert :)

A and I went to go visit the grandparents last summer...and it was HOT.

So we went to the pool.

While we were at the pool it was lunch time. Grandpa bought these spoons...they turn white when the food temperature is too hot. Just by sitting in the sun at the pool, they turned white. Clearly, Palm Desert is TOO hot.

Morning walks to the park were lots of fun however :) And sleeping in the pack n' play - super exciting!

But I really think that we will wait at least until the fall to venture down there again...warm enough to enjoy the awesome community pool, yet not hot enough to melt anything (my ATM card once melted in the car, true story!).

It's lots of fun to hang out with the grandparents - but perhaps in more mellow climate! I sometimes can't beleive I grew up there.

So, it was wonderful to see you mom and dad - come visit us this summer!

Get your kid a National Parks Passport!

One of my coolest possessions is my National Parks Passport. I bought it in 1999 and it is nearly full...so I recently bought my second passport! There are 397 National Park units around the country and there is at least one passport cancellation stamp at each park. Some even have more than one...

It is still fun years later to go through the book and remember all the fun times I've had :)

My first National Parks Passport and my new one...ready for the first stamp!

Some of my first cancellation stamps

And yes, I have already bought a passport for A. If you'll notice...his first stamp was February 13, 2011. He was less than a month old when he got his first stamp. Hopefully this will be something he'll enjoy his whole life. So far he has six cancellations...so many more to go!

You can buy a passport at most National Parks or online here. It's fun for the whole family, I promise!

Food, Oh the food of SF

Last month I had a work trip to San Fransisco - the company was great, the training excellent, but the food, the food was AMAZING. I sort of forgot what it was like to be able to lounge around really enjoying food at restaurants. So for your viewing pleasure...my San Fransisco food...

Dreaming of the Canadian Rockies

We are contemplating vacationing in the Canadian Rockies this fall. So I started to do some research - wow are the photos stunning! We've been trying to go for years, and things kept getting in the way. But I think we are serious about it this year. I'm excited about some hiking, snow, alpine lakes, moose....

I pinned some inspiration to share :)
