I need some advice here. My dentist says to that kids should visit the dentist during their first year. Yeah, well, that didn't happen.
A is now 18 months, and has not been to the dentist. Is it too late? Have I doomed A to bad teeth?
OK, I'm not serious about dooming him. But in all seriousness...when do you take little kids to the dentist? Do you sit with them in the chair? Do they let strange men (or women?) look into their mouths, really? What can they tell you about the 12 little teeth in their mouth?
I'm not against taking him, I'm just a little confused about the details...the dentist says it's to get them used to going...but wouldn't it just be the start of freaking them out? hmmm...advice needed!
Thanks :)
Our pediatrician told us to take the kids after their first birthdays. Between being pregnant when Z turned one, to having a car accident shortly before F turned one, we let it slide for way too long and I worried we were the worst parents, ever. Zoe went shortly before her 5th birthday, Finn when he was 3 and a half. Both children did great and have very healthy teeth and mouths. I think we were very lucky, but I also know that us brushing their teeth regularly helped.
ReplyDeleteMy biggest piece of advice is that you find a pediatric dentist with a great reputation and bedside manner. The staff at our office was great, the decor was very kid friendly, and they had tv's on the ceiling to distract the kids while the dentist and hygienist worked.
Good luck!
Thanks Keely! That's great advice. Our dentist is a family dentist, but maybe I'll try a pediatric one, that make me feel more comfortable! BTW< your kids are so so adorable :)!
DeleteLike the comment above find a pediatric dentist they are great. I started taking my son when he was about 11 months and they do a cleaning for kids every 6 months. They do sit in your lap til they feel comfortable and I think it is a good thing to start them early, early prevention!! The dentist put sealants on my sons molars when he was 3 because they were "groovy" and can easily get cavities. It's just great to get them used to going to the dentist and early prevention.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your insight! I totally agree that prevention is key...and I need to get off my butt :)
