Bittersweet

Well, we decided to move. To move to the other side of the country. To New England, to be more precise. I am excited, but also sad at what we are leaving behind - especially my family.

I am a little amazed at this turn of events, I have to say that I have never imagined myself living in New England. Just the name evokes thoughts of cold winters, of ivy league colleges, history, old money, summer homes...most of what I know, I clearly know from books, movies and a few friends.

I am not sure what to expect. How this California girl is going to adapt to this new world is quite the question. I am both excited and a little nervous all at once. I have lived on the east coast, but technically only in the "south." I have driven through New England, visited cities, national park sites and even a boarding school along the way.

But the idea of taking up residence a ferry ride from Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard, of walking the streets of historic towns, of ice skating on outdoor ponds, of owning multiple coats, of having a baby born in Massachusetts :) - these things are both scary and exciting. This is, I guess, as change should be - both scary and exciting.

Wish me luck!

This post was inspired by Bittersweet by Miranda Beverly-Whittemore, a novel that exposes the gothic underbelly of an American dynasty, and an outsider’s hunger to belong. Join From Left to Write on May 20 we discuss Bittersweet. As a member, I received a copy of the book for review purposes.
