My First Virtual 10k - "Run 10 Feed 10"

This past Sunday I did my first "Virtual Run." I signed up for the "Run 10 Feed 10" race - where your entry supports feeding 10 meals for those that are hungry in the US. It's a great cause that I am happy to support!

Now, I'm not sure this format is my favorite, but I'm glad I tried! I didn't have to drive anywhere, deal with porta-potties, crowds and I could do it on my schedule. However, I realized I really do like the race atmosphere. I like the camaraderie, adrenaline, new places to run, people cheering you on. I tend to run faster in a race than just at home.

That said, I had a pretty nice run. I ran it in 1:03 (my one and only previous 10k was 58:47). All my miles were under 10 minutes except for the last mile - I had a huge hill, some gear malfunction and I was just tired! But the run itself was beautiful :)

I enjoyed the early morning streets to myself - I also ran along the river for awhile so got to see some herons and egrets. I saw a snail and took a pic for the little guy :) I also was appreciating the bird of paradise in our yard (3 years to bloom!) while stretching.

I definitely could have used some refueling around mile 5 - which I did in my last 10k. I also clearly need a better iphone holder. I bought a cheap one on the internet and it is itchy and doesn't stay in place. Any suggestions?

Other than that, I'd say I did pretty well on my first virtual run :)

  2. Virtual races seem like a really interesting concept, and for a good cause too! I do love the race atmosphere though, so it might be some time till I try one. And congrats on completing your first virtual run!

  4. I love the idea of virtual races, especially for such great causes. And I LOVE your running shoes! Funny, I just realized I haven't seen a snail in years. Ever since I moved to the east coast....weird!

  5. I've never done a virtual race, but I read about this one a few days ago and it sounded like a very good cause. I'm still considering signing up. It is for an awesome cause and I could do it as part of my long run.

As for an iphone holders, when I run with my iphone, I often put it in my SpiBelt. In case you've never tried spibelt and you're skeptical, these things defy the laws of physics; they don't move. I always forget that mine is there, even when my phone is in it. I highly recommend it!

  6. First off I just wanted to say that is one gorgeous flower! Definitely worth wait for it to bloom : )

I think virtual races are a fun idea and a great way to generate interest and potentially funds for a charity because they cost so much less (and have significantly easier logistics) than an actual race.
I also really enjoy the pageantry of a real race and running in another city is such a great way to learn about it (better than driving).
Congrats on having a good race!
I don’t run with my IPhone so I can’t help you there unfortunately.
