Amazingly, since I live in a country that neighbors Canada - I am sad to admit that I have only been across the border once. Yep, just once, eight years ago. I had the pleasure of working at Glacier National Park that summer. I was doing amphibian surveys, where they would give us a map with some wetlands marked, and they would send us off to figure out what kinds of amphibians we'd find. I got to go off trail, to hike some of the most beautiful and rugged country I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. We'd go for 5-8 days at a time. I was the only member of the research team that did not see a grizzly while in the back country (lucky or not?).
I almost kissed the frog... |
One of my assignments was the area just south of the border. The easiest way to get there was to drive across the border to Canada, enter the bordering Waterton Lakes National Park then take a boat back across. My brief encounter with Canada left me with the following impressions: Everyone is so very friendly! They allow fast-food restaurants in National Parks (Subway)??, There were Park Rangers on horses dressed up like the guards at Buckingham Palace (fuzzy hats and all). Yep, that is pretty much the sum total of what I remember from my brief hours in Canada. The scenery was stunning. The border crazy. The people smiley.
Alas, I do not have any photos of me in Canada - the best I can get, photos of me in Glacier National Park, just to the South :)
Me trying to get the perfect photo is Glacier National Park - no, not Canada - and I lived to tell the tale! |
I know my husband has a much richer depth of experience in Canada, so I'll have to see if I can get him to share too :) I can't wait for vacation!
Anyone have any suggestions for Banff or Jasper?
Oh my goooooddnnnnesssss!!!! That picture of you on the glacier makes my heart race! I am so afraid of heights, you are brave!
ReplyDeleteI was much younger then :) It's funny, if my child did that now, I'd freak!
DeleteI love that picture of you (albeit not in Canada) hope you have some fun Canadaventures! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! We can't wait :)
DeleteI am from Canada!! yay Canada!
ReplyDeleteOoh, I'll have to get some advice from you :)
DeleteThat pic of you in Glacier National Park is amazing!! What part of Canada will you be vacationing in? :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I took it on a timer :) That's why I look like I'm falling off! We're going to Banff and Jasper National Parks!
DeleteHave a great time! I went to Canada when I was a kid and still remember the waiters giving me a weird look when I asked for ketchup with my fries because they use vinegar up there! :)
ReplyDeleteI've crossed into Canada one time about 14 years ago. We drove from Michigan over to Niagra. Can't wait to hear all about your experiences!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in New York for BlogHer, two of my roommates were from Toronto. I got a weekend lesson in everything Canadian and it was wonderful. I have never been there, except if you count Victoria on our way up to Alaska, but I'd really love to go and spend some time there.
ReplyDeleteSo jealous! I've always wanted to go to Canada but haven't made it there yet (aside from driving through on the way to New York but the only place I visited was a convenience store). I can't wait to hear all about your adventure!
ReplyDeleteThought I would also browse through a few of your other entries, Oh my word this shot is really cool but something I would never do in a million years. You were certainly brave.
