Things we pass down

When you get married, or enter into a long term relationship, there are negotiations. The holidays come to mind. Where you will spend the major days of importance. Which year with which family. There are things you compromise on and things you hold firm (real maple syrup, for example). There are choices to be made and not always an easy answer.

When you have a baby, you get to choose what to pass down. And the negotiations are much simpler, because you can pass down all the traditions, you don't have to compromise. You can choose the things you like and leave out the bad. You can both pass down your favorite holiday traditions, and leave out the ones that just don't make sense.

For my husband, one of these traditions is trains. Every Christmas he makes a train layout under the Christmas tree. It is not something I grew up with, but it is a tradition I am happy to adopt. And it is so much fun to introduce A to as well.
We took A for his very first train ride this past weekend. A steam train. He wore his train shoes and his conductor hat :) He looked so cute. I am not sure what we are going to do this Christmas since he will be  able to crawl and, well, the trains will be in danger. So how to incorporate trains into his first Christmas?
